Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a state of mind of intense imagination and concentration. When you were a kid, you were able to lose yourself in your imagination while you were playing. You knew what was happening for real and yet you were able to let your thoughts carry you away. Hypnosis can best be thought of as very powerful daydream, during which you are very open to new ideas that you can make your own in terms of changing your behavior. In that sense, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist simply guides you as far as you are willing to go in terms of your self improvement. In no way can you be "made" to do anything. A hypnotized person is completely aware of what is happening but feels so relaxed and so good that he continues to allow the hypnotist to be his guide. At any time during a hypnosis session you are able to stop. You are always in control. Who can be hypnotized? Can I be hypnotized? Since hypnosis involves being "lost in your imagination" anyone can be hypnotized, but not everyone can be hypnotized to the same deep level, at least not without continued practice and training. However, it appears that even being hypnotized "lightly" can be just as effective for helping you make changes in your life. You can begin with simple relaxation exercises and take your ability to go into hypnosis as far as you want. What if I can't come out of it? Have you ever known anyone who did not snap out of a day dream? There is no danger of being "stuck" in hypnosis. What if I say or do something I don't want to while hypnotized? As mentioned above, you are always in control and can stop anytime. You would not do anything under hypnosis that you would not want to do anyway, or say anything you would not want to say. Just like when you were a kid, you couldn't be made to say or do anything you did not want to while you were day dreaming or play-pretending with your friends. How many sessions will it take? This is going to depend, because while many clients will experience immediate change (for example, will immediately quit smoking, with no discomfort) the change may not be a deep change. Old habits like to reassert themselves and new habits need time to grow roots. For planning purposes we suggest that clients think about 3-4 sessions.  Some clients may then decide to use hypnosis to work on other issues in their lives and so they stay on for addi- tional sessions. Some clients resolve their issue in one session and are able to go forward. Because people are variable with respect to how fast they make the changes they want to make, we never try to lock clients into a set number of sessions. We take things a session at a time, until you are happy with your results or, occasionally, if feel that this is not for you, you are free to stop making appointments. You are welcome back anytime to do further work. Will you make me do goofy things? We do stage shows and other hypnosis demonstrations, mostly as a way of advertising the practice. But the stage-show stuff is left at the stage and we don't do any in the office. We will not try to "get you to cluck like a chicken" or any other silly thing that has nothing to do with the issue you want help with. That being said, we want you to have fun with this and give you the best hypnotic experi- ence. You may experience some wonder, creative images, feelings and sensations not unlike what you might experience if you were a volunteer at a stage show. Do you accept insurance? No, sorry to say; it is not available. There is no third-party payer that currently covers hypnotism. For this reason we work as quickly as is appropriate with you and the issues you bring. It is possible that, if you have a flexible spending account, the company that administers the plan for you may reimburse you for a program that helps you quit smoking, or with a doctor's note, weight loss or other health issues. You'll have to disccuss that with the company that does the reimbursement.
